Welcome to Ios! The coastline of this predominantly mountainous island with its countless chapels, its olive trees and its vineyards is adorned with small, attractive coves. These features combined with the crystal-clear sea and its superb sandy beaches are what makes Ios the popular island it is! Locally called Nios, this is an island whose history goes back to prehistoric times. According to Herodotus, the “poet of poets”, the “god-like” Homer was buried at Plakotos, in the northern part of the island. Pausanias tells us that there was an inscription at Delphi confirming that poet’s interment on Ios, the homeland of his mother. Hora, the main town, stands on the site of the ancient city and is a typical Cyclonic settlement, with whitewashed house, narrow alleys and chapels.
